Dr. Sharad Gadre
Sharad started learning classical music from the age of 11 from a local musician in his home town. After moving to Pune for his education, he learned from two stalwarts of the Gwaliar Gharana, Pt. Yashewant Sadashiv Mirashibuwa, and Pt. Nagesh Khalikar, for 6 years. In 1958, he was a finalist as the representative of the Pune radio station in the national competition in Delhi. for young musicians under 21, sponsored by All India Radio. After leaving India for higher education, he continued to develop his music on his own. He moved to Seattle in 1969 after completing his Ph. D. in Structural Engineering from Imperial College in London, UK, and has been living there since then. He was a major part of the first introduction of Indian classical music to the Seattle area in early 1970s in organizing the first few concerts by visiting musicians such as Prabha Atre and Jitendra Abhisheki. That effort led to the beginning of Ragamala which has been operating in Seattle for the past 26 years

He has accompanied several prominent visiting musicians such as Prabah Atre, Jitendra Abhisheki, Pandit Jasraj, Dinkar Kaikini, Ullhas Kashalkar, Yunus Husain Khan, Lilit Rao, Sanjeev Abhyankar and others in their concerts in Seattle and in the Pacific Northwest. He has composed several classical compositions and has been active in teaching classical music to several students over the last few years. Over the years he has given concerts and workshops in the Pacific Northwest.
In addition to being a musician, Sharad is also an accomplished computing professional and he combined these two skills in developing RagaParichaya, a software program for PCs, with extensive audio capability, that can help musicians at all levels by providing extensive facilities for self-learning of 70 commonly performed Ragas, doing the basic practice patterns or 'riyaj', and documenting and recording compositions composed by users. Sharad is currently working on providing improvisation facilities in the program and on making it available on-line.
